 minimalist excesses
hello from cara. you may know me from twitter as @caraesten.
i make weird art with old computers and CRTs.
having spent a lot of time lately reading some truly beautiful
writing here in gopherspace, i thought i might like to create
my own little spot.

This Quadra 650 I'm typing on is almost too fast. Somehow, it feels zippier
the 630 it replaced, but given the near-identical specs, that's probably jus
imagination. The video card is objectively better though; I can turn up the
resolution to 832x624 and everything seems small, distant, so much space to
with, and all of it clear and sharp.

For the last few weeks, I've known my garden was overrun with weeds. I'm
sure it had been steadily getting worse, I must have seen it before then,
but I had largely bkeeping it from my mind. Sometime during the
fall, the last stalks of the mustard greens had dried up with their rattling
seed pods intact and I had managed to lie to myself till nearly the end of
winter about my plans to harvest the seeds. In the meantime, everything I
had planted was lost under the tall grasses.

Repairs. Taking apart the computer where I read posts in gopherspace,
firing it up, making sure it all works properly, then getting carried
away with reading. I installed a SoundBlaster 16. There's an FM synth
chip I can use on it for writing music. The first time, there was
some gunk on the ISA pins, so I take it out, reseat it, pop it back
in. Was it something on the pins, or was it a driver conflict? I make
changes to the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

I love reminding myself that I still know how to make a fire. Setting the lo
just right, starting the initial flame, and then tending it as it grows is s
a reassuring activity for me. In one sense, I get the same pleasure out of i
from playing SimCity: watching a thing you set in motion take on a life of i
own. I'm warmed by the logs that were caught by the sticks that were caught
the twigs which were caught by the wood shavings which I lit with my lighter
over an hour ago. All related, all building upon each other.

The rain is falling outside as I write this; there's something odd about
witnessing a rainstorm in a desert. It's supposed to happen every once and a
while, but I never expect to be around to witness it. I don't live here, and
feels like a fairly intimate and rare thing to see for someone who's just
passing through. Anyway, I'm in Scottdale with my parents and my sister for
Christmas, and it's pouring.
