Cellar in the Sky
The World Trade Center in NYC has a restaurant complex on the
107th floor of Tower One. One of the dining rooms located there
is called "The Cellar in the Sky".
The Cellar is a private room seating 36 diners for a single
sitting per evening. Dinner begins at approximately 7:30 pm and
runs for almost three hours. All diners are fed the same course
at approximately the same time.
The menu hosts a seven course dinner designed around five
different wines. All food courses and wines are pre-selected by
the chef and wine master. The menu changes every two weeks.
The dinner (and drinking) was lots of fun. The food
courses were first rate although i personally found the portions
to be a little on the small side. The wines, however, were
plentiful.
The tables are nicely spaced so as to afford much comfort and
privacy. A classical guitar player provides the musical
entertainment.
One of the more memorable parts of the evening was that as soon
as we entered the dining room, we were shown to our table and the
waiter poured some champagne for us. What a lovely way to be
greeted in a foreign setting. It was a charming experience.
Unfortunately, the only wines that i can remember being served
were a Chateau Talbot (which i later priced at about $23 retail)
and a Rioja. I know these are vague but my memory of the other
three are worse.
The dining room itself does not offer the magnificent view that
the rest of the restaurant has. We did not find this to be a
problem. The complex is large enough that we were able to stroll
around before entering the dining room and enjoy the view from
several locations.
The cost of dinner was fifty five dollars per person (plus tax
and tip). The wines served would certainly represent a large
portion of the tariff. Reservations are a must. I believe
weekends are booked a couple of weeks in advance. The Christmas
and New Years season require even more advance notice.
