Mondavi vs. Mondavi
Those about to go out and purchase Mondavi Red Table Wine should note that
there are TWO brands of wine labled "Mondavi". One is labled "C.K. Mondavi"
and is produced at Charles Krug by Peter Mondavi. The other is
"Robert Mondavi", produced by Robert Mondavi (Peter's brother) at the
Robert Mondavi winery in Oakville, Napa Valley, CA. My opinion is that the
Robert Mondavi Red table wine (sometimes available on sale (at
least around the SF Bay area) in magnums for around 5 dollars) is the
superior. Robert Mondavi's "premium" wines are truly fine and equal
to any French wine (excepting, maybe, depending on your taste, and
handful of Grands Crus)
By the way, I am fortunate enough to live in Vallejo, 15 minutes from Napa,
and would be glad to try and answer any questions on California wines.
(Disclaimer: I am NOT an expert, merely an enthusiastic "amateur" in the
original sense of the word.)
