Re: news etc. (cbosgd.113 followup)
I'm a little surprised by ecc's complaint -- I find it easier to weed
out the junk when I can see that something is on arms-d (and hence a
flame to be delayed if I'm on a slow terminal), rather than being
from FOO@BAR. Anyway, I have no complaints about the current scheme (to
be sure, I *was* one of the people who suggested it....)
Another point: I suspect that the "forgeries" have solved another
problem, to wit people on Usenet not getting many articles that originate
on Usenet. I'm pretty sure the problem involved netnews (at least the
original Duke versions) not rebroadcasting certain items because the
author's site appeared to have seen it already. That is, if I send
something in to a non-digest list like INFO-CPM, it shows as being from
"decvax!duke!unc!smb@Berkeley". Netnews, having been designed for a uucp-
only environment, says 'Aha! This article came from some user "smb@Berkeley",
at site "unc", via "duke" and "decvax"' -- and won't transmit it to any
of them.
Perhaps the reply part of the problem could be solved by generating
a "Reply-to" field with the author's name -- thus, "reply" will get it
to him/her, while "Reply" will submit a followup article.
