Ethernet capabilities of 820 and STAR
Last week I was at a private showing of the STAR, 860, and
x20. Based on what I saw, the questions I got answered
and the literature, here is what seems to be the EtherNet
capabilities of the STAR and the 820 (I didn't get any
info on the 860)
STAR: The STAR Information System literature states that
it comes complete with an "internal controller and
cable connector for tapping in to (sic) the Xerox
Ethernet network". This is what the literature
states but the sales rep for ARMY did not know
about an internal controller already in the STAR.
An ethernet connection was not demonstrated on any
of the equipment at the showing.
820: The 820 definitely does not have an ethernet internal
interface. Ethernet campatibility is available thru
the Xerox 872/873 Communication Server using tty mode
on the 820. (the 872/873 is a file server)
So what it breaks down to is this: there are not too many
folks at Xerox that know how these things connect to the
ethernet. The literature is written so that one can assume
a lot.
Bottom line: STAR MAY have internal ethernet capabilities
820 DOES NOT have direct ethernet capabilities
