Mervyn Peake's Great "Gormenghast" Series
One of the world's finest examples of dark fantasy storytelling was cut off from completion by the author's untimely death.
Mervyn Peake had plans to continue his now-beloved series of novels, but the final release in the story was completed by his widow.
"Gormenghast is a remote and reclusive earldom dominated by the huge Castle Gormenghast at its centre, and ruled by the noble family of Groan since time immemorial."
British author, artist and poet Mervyn Peake produced the four novels in the Gormenghast series between the years 1946 and 1959. The completed series of works written solely by Peake himself include "Titus Groan", Gormenghast, Titus Alone and Boy in Darkness.
The story itself follows the strategic and strange inhabitants of the massive, miles-wide Gormenghast castle, centering somewhat on the life of the character Titus, who has just been born in the first book.
A wild progression following Titus's growing disillusionment with his inheritance of the Groan house throne takes us from the sprawling castle to the great lands beyond and plenty of places in between.
